Ratings Explained

The team has rated the conditions at each spot depending on the wind direction. Our users then add their ratings and we build this into the model. The charts on each spot page show the rating from all users and for the current logged in user.

Consider the rating for classic UK spot, Daymer Bay. Sailable in just about any direction, for waves Daymer Bay really in excels in South Westerly, Westerly and North Westerly. Easterlies are offshore and a South Easterly tends to be blocked by Brea Hill and is usually gusty. Scoring these wind directions from 0 to 3 results in the following chart:


As part of each forecast run, our model then provides two wind ratings shown as stars:
  • The total wind forecasted for the spot using black stars
  • The spot rating for the forecasted wind strength and direction using yellow stars

Wave rating

Finally, we provide the wave ratings for each spot shown as a red outline on the star. Consider the following ratings when there is plenty of wind available.

Excellent wind, but the waves will be local wind swell.

When there is no wind, the swell may still be pumping. We show this as a faint red star without a fill colour. Consider grabbing the surf board.
